Preparing our Students and Parents for Moving Forward to the Next Level

When it is time to move forward in life, including the next grade or classroom, a significant change that is exciting for children can make some parents apprehensive. Our teachers and administrators know that offering a sense of familiarity by hosting classroom visits and meeting teachers from the next level eases this transition. Recently, our teachers welcomed younger students into their classrooms to see what to expect in the coming year. Many of these visits start in the fall and continue through the spring.

Our Montessori classrooms are mixed-age from Primary to Middle School (ages 3 to 14). Students spend multiple years in the same classroom, with strong connections with classmates and teachers. By introducing upcoming classrooms and teachers well in advance, we build familiarity for our students. This early orientation is a stepping stone to building confidence and comfort in their learning journey. Our children get comfortable while also getting excited for what’s to come.

Similarly, we hold “moving-up” events for parents to familiarize them with future classrooms and teachers. Parents are oriented on what to expect, address questions, and expand their understanding of the next level of learning.

Another element of our approach is to foster a sense of belonging by matching incoming students with peer mentors already in their new classroom. Their mentors help incoming classmates explore what learning will look like at the next level while receiving guidance from those who have already experienced it. As our students (and parents) cross the threshold of what's next in their educational journey, they feel prepared, confident, and excited for what's ahead.

To learn more about Hudson Montessori School's interdisciplinary, theme-based learning approach to education, the Montessori philosophy and methodology, or how the school fosters the love of learning for its students, the school welcomes parents to learn more for children aged 2 to eighth grade at our upcoming open houses.
