Members of our EcoClub recently visited LifeCap Farms, a new sustainable urban mushroom farm based in Jersey City. Our students toured the facility and learned the basics of mushroom farming and how LifeCap uses software to monitor mushroom growth. This software alerts farmers to any changes in the growing environment and allows them to make any changes needed for a consistent and healthy crop.
Students viewed the growing process in action and learned when mushrooms were ready for harvest. They tried their hand at harvesting mushrooms and packaging them for delivery.
As a STEM-accredited campus, Hudson Montessori School uses experiences and immersion to connect students with nature and the local ecosystem. The school also stresses the importance of community action and helping students find their place in the world as global citizens. Trips to local organizations like LifeCap Farms are just one way our teachers take learning beyond the walls of our school, making the outside world an additional classroom.
LifeCap is passionate about providing local, organic, gourmet mushrooms and mushroom-based products to local communities and partners with urban farmers to spread their love of mushrooms as a food full of health benefits and a sustainable meat substitute.
