Montessori in a Minute: Montessori Language Skyscrapers
In Montessori Education, our educators create unique ways to encourage language development and literacy skills in our students. Our Montessori Language Skyscrapers are just one innovative tool of many that allows students to experience language hands-on. This activity uses the concept of building "skyscrapers" from words or phrases to create towering structures that engage young learners.
The Importance of Montessori Language Skyscrapers
This work involves using word cards to construct a tower, each representing a part of speech. Children are encouraged to build up drawer structures by adding words or phrases to the stack. As they match their word cards, students practice using parts of speech in context (like matching antonyms or making compound words) while fostering a sense of achievement and curiosity.
The Montessori Skyscraper is part of the Lower Elementary (grades 1-3) Language curriculum, which helps children understand and practice synonyms, homonyms, compound words, alphabetizing, and so much more. This work remains available for students to practice, review with, or even complete for fun!
The Language Skyscrapers encourage self-paced learning and allow students to explore language concepts at their own pace. Like many Montessori activities, this material is adaptable for several age groups, starting with simple words for younger children and moving to more complex words and phrases for older learners. It strengthens foundational literacy skills and supports problem-solving, spatial awareness, and concentration. The Montessori Language Skyscrapers offer a playful yet educational way for children to develop key language skills in a way that makes learning enjoyable.
The Montessori in a Minute Series
