Students from our Middle School recently took a field trip to Battery Park to monitor several Oyster Research Stations as part of our partnership with the Billion Oyster Project.
Our Elementary and Middle School STEAM program partners each year with local organizations that support conservation and revitalization in the local community. This year, our school worked alongside the Billion Oyster Project to support the oyster repopulation in the New York Harbor.
After a ride on the ferry to Battery Park, students pulled up multiple oyster research stations to gather data on the local oyster population. First, they used calipers to measure the oysters from the umbo to the bill. Other data included the total number of oysters (dead or alive), different species found in the cage, and the lengths of the oysters. This data was added to our school’s annual longitudinal study of the Hudson River.
