Congratulations to our math team on their second-place win at the region's Math Counts competition. Hudson Montessori School joined 26 teams from Bergen and Hudson County to compete. With this win, our team has earned the right to advance to the state championship.
MathCounts is a nationwide mathematics competition for middle schoolers that is held in venues nationwide. The competition works to build problem-solving skills through multiple levels of fun and engaging contests.
How the Competition Works
The competition has four rounds, each focusing on a unique math skill.
The first round hones speed and accuracy by offering students 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator.
The second round centers around problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. Competitors receive four pairs of problems and have 6 minutes to complete each pair using a calculator.
The third round supports problem-solving and collaboration while teams finish ten math problems in 20 minutes using a calculator.
In the final round, four students from each school's team display their speed and accuracy as they solve a mix of questions and must answer each within 45 seconds per problem without a calculator.
