Afterschool Enrichment Programs

Hudson Montessori offers several After School Enrichment Programs, comprised of a variety of extracurricular classes offered throughout the week for the convenience of our school’s parents and children. Most of these programs are run by outside organizations for an additional fee. In addition, there is a one-time Registration Fee of $25.00 unless the child was enrolled in the same program in the previous session. The After School Enrichment Programs are optional and separate from the Extended Day Program.

After School programs offered in Spring 2017 include:

Chess (Session 3 Fee: $120.00)

Your children will be coached by an internationally renowned master who has won many championships and titles. She is a highly experienced teacher, bringing fun and laughter to Chess. This class is offered to ages 5+.  See schedule for details.

Embroidery Workshop (Session 3 Fee: $150.00)

Embroidery is an ancient handicraft defined as the art of forming decorative designs on fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as beads, sequins and more.

The basic techniques or stitches on surviving examples of the earliest embroidery—chain stitch, running stitch, back stitch, satin stitch, cross stitch—remain the fundamental techniques of hand embroidery today.  Our embroidery workshop will teach your children these basic skills in an easy and fun way. They will learn these ancient techniques that have remained unchanged for thousands of years.

Students will design two projects that they will take home with them:

  • Pencil holder
  • Plush toy

Hip Hop Gymnastics (Session 3 Fee: $115.00)

Our programs are designed especially for youth children beginning at age 2 ½ and our activities are based on the guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association for the Education of Youth Children (NAEYC). Using 1-3 minute activity combinations, which include coordinating props and music, we create the perfect experience for young children. These activities and class segments have been tested on real children before they become approved for inclusion in our lessons.

Indian Dance, Music and Theatre (Session 3 Fee: $150.00)

Boys and Girls will learn the fundamentals of Indian dance – postures, balance, stances, hand and feet coordination, a sense of rhythm and facial expressions followed by choreographed dance to music. Choreography may be set to traditional, semi-classical, folk or popular music depending on participants. In case any Indian movie song (appropriate for children) is selected, choreography will be taught based on the genre it originates from. Children will be introduced to different genres of age appropriate Indian music.
Beginning in this session, children will learn specific choreographed dance(s) for upcoming performances*.

Tennis (Session 3 Fee: Monday Classes $115.00, Thursday Classes $151.00)

A certified PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) Instructor, ICI Certified Coach, and USTA rated 4.5/5.0 player James Alfalla has been involved in the tennis world for over 20 years. Educated in a variety of teaching methods both modern and traditional, Mr. Jim brings the experience of many to provide a singular teaching style that helps students learn and improve as quickly as possible. Whether a child is just starting out, an experienced junior, or even a seasoned adult, Mr. Jim has the knowledge and experience to take their game to a new level and fully enjoy the game for a lifetime.TennisApproach specializes in the U.S.T.A endorsed 10 and under format. This format involves shorter courts, low compression balls, appropriately sized equipment and a variety of skills in which movement, hand-eye coordination and racket skill progressions are introduced to the students.  The overall format eliminates the frustration often faced by children when they use the wrong size racket and a net or court that is inappropriately sized.

TennisApproach values game play as kids learn to develop the skills to rally. For the students, it is all about the excitement and fun but also about proper technique.  TennisApproach strongly believes in starting kids early with proper movement drills and games as well as teaching them correct modern stroke technique.  TennisApproach has its own unique curriculum that engages the children by using Math, Language skills, Sounds and Science so that children feel and get engaged as they would in the normal classroom, but within the context of learning tennis.

Ballet (Session 3 Fee: $108.00)

Mexican-American dancer, Celeste Landa, has a diverse and accomplished career as a young performer. Her training began at the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in Palm Beach, Florida and continued at the American Ballet Theatre and Ballet Austin. Ms. Celeste spent three years dancing with Ballet des Amériques as a corps de ballet and a faculty member. Additionally she taught in Florida, New York and New Jersey. Ms. Celeste’s pre-ballet classes will introduce a structured environment while allowing children to recognize their body mobility. Focus will be on coordination, musicality and rhythm, introduced in creative and imaginative ways. Students will gain knowledge of terminology, alignment and flexibility, providing them the foundation of ballet.

Code Club (Session 3 Fee: $90.00)

To delve into computer programming, students in Code Club will use Scratch, a tile based visual programming software designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab,. Students will create and share their own interactive stories, animations, games, music and art. Programming concepts will first be introduced using unplugged interactions after which the students will apply the concepts while using Scratch.  As they explore Scratch, they will also learn  to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically. Level I (Kindergarten and Grade 1) Students will be first introduced to concepts in coding using unplugged activities. They will then apply these concepts using ScratchJr.

Level II ( Grade 2 – Grade 5) Students will be introduced to basic programming logic using unplugged activities and will then create their own animation in Scratch.

Level III (Grade 2- Grade 5) Students will review coding concepts, explore variables and conditionals and design their own interactive games.

Elementary Engineering : Building Bridges (Session 3 Fee: $108.00)

( Kindergarten – Grade 5)

During our spring session we will take on the roles of Civil Engineers as we design and build bridges. With current day examples students will learn about the different types of bridges – arch, beam, truss and suspension. We will look at the shapes that are used to construct each bridge and evaluate which shape is the strongest. Students will reinforce their understanding of “push” and “pull” as they explore how forces act on different structures. In the final design challenge , students will plan, build, and test their own bridges. These models will be displayed during our Social Studies Fair.

Math Club (Session 3 Fee: $108.00)

Math Club is intended for students who like math and wish to participate in math competitions. It is not tutoring, homework help or test prep. Students will need to attend weekly math classes and will be expected to complete weekly homework. Students will have a chance to participate in the National Math League, which runs monthly competitions until March. Students are expected to complete all work and assignments, otherwise there is little benefit.

Piano – Elementary (Session 3 Fee: Tuesday Classes $150.00, Thursday Classes $175.00)

As a freelance musician, Isaac spends a majority of his time in the greater New York City area. He performs mainly as an accompanist in the styles of classical, jazz, and theatre music. Specializing in music education, Isaac has an affinity for teaching piano and general music studies. In his free time, he provides audio/visual assistance for DJ’s across the Tri-State area. Isaac hopes to combine his passion for music and formal education in building a lifelong career in the music industry.At Hudson Montessori, Isaac will be teaching piano lessons and the fundamentals of music to students in hopes of instilling the artistic creativity that the art holds. With weekly practicing, students will develop a discipline in the arts, transferable to daily life.

Piano – Primary  (Session 3 Fee: Monday Classes $125.00, Wednesday Classes $150.00, Thursday Classes $175.00)

Ms. Christine has a Bachelor in Music of Arts from William Paterson University, where she was also the recipient of the Trustee Scholarship. Besides working as the Lead Music Teacher for the primary and toddler classes, she has been teaching private piano lessons for more than 3 years. She is certified in the Music Together program where she learned various teaching techniques and incorporates them into her classes. Her positive energy keeps the children interested in learning new songs, by encompassing that which all piano teachers should have: expertise, patience, enthusiasm, kindness, and dedication. She instills a love of music in every student and encourages them to think for themselves too. She tailors her teaching approach to the individual child in terms of his or her personality, interests, and abilities. Ms. Christine has performed at Carnegie Hall and one day hopes to see her students perform there as well.

Spanish (Session 3 Fee: $90.00)

Ms. Johanna Ocampo shares her passion for the Spanish language through unique games, educational activities and vocabulary songs that will enrich your child’s learning experience. She designs a beautiful space for children to create, explore and play while developing communication skills. The multicultural course will include materials from Spain and Latin America.

Yoga (Session 3 Fee: $126.00)

Ms. Ilsi teaches yoga and gymnastics to children studios throughout New Jersey. She is a Karma Kids Yoga Certified Children’s Yoga Teacher. She is also certified by the United States Gymnastics Association. Children will learn basic yoga postures in a class that fosters flexibility while building strength, coordination, motor skills and confidence through music, games and story time. The Program will also work on skills to concentrate and focus their energy through specific positive feedback and direct practice.
